The ritual of cleansing of the body during the sacred Kumbha Mela festival in India has been brought to the U.S. with the Hindu Sangam organizing this event at UC Irvine Sept. 10, as well as at DeAnza College in Cupertino, Calif. Sept. 9 .

The event started with a procession featuring mantras and recitation of sacred texts. Each
participating group had its prominent deity wheeled on elaborately decorated carts for about a mile amidst religious grandeur. The participating Mandirs were: the Mandir in Irvine; Laxmi Narayan Mandir in Riverside and Placentia; Radha Krishna Mandir in Norwalk, Roscoe/Northridge; Sanatan Dharma Mandir and Sindhu Center.
